Tunnel underneath the Dead Vistula opened for traffic

“Open the barriers” was the motto on Sunday, 24th of April, 2016, in Gdansk when after four years of construction the tunnel under the Dead Vistula has been opened. The day before, 30,000 visitors came for the “open house day”, and the public’s response was excellent.

The design of the tunnel was implemented by the German-Polish joint venture formed by the design companies SSF Ingenieure AG and Europrojekt Gdansk S.A. in the framework of the overall project “Connection of the airport to Gdansk Harbour – Slowackiego route”. The route is an important link in the new transport network of Gdansk.

The tunnel, built by hydro-shield TBM, has a total length of 1377.5 m and two separated tubes, one in each direction. Where the tunnel crosses the Dead Vistula, the river is around 120 m wide and 12 m deep.
