As a project of construction work performed in the existing structure under running operations, the refurbishment of the platform halls of the historic Dresden Central Station was unique because of the size of the new membrane roof. The design of the architect Sir Norman Foster includes covering the approximately 30,000 m2 of roof surface area of all the platform halls with a PTFE-coated fibreglass skin; as a result, the existing iron supporting structure was refurbished and strengthened.
