Green Bridge near Pforzheim

Construction of integral arch bridge to protect wild animals

Motorway A8 between interchange Pforzheim-North and Pforzheim-South is currently being expanded to 6 lanes. In the framework of this project, a new noise barrier as well as a 64-metre-long green bridge are erected.

The motorway section is located in the Schwarzwald natural reserve where numerous animal species live. The new bridge connects their habitats and reduces the risk of roadkill by providing a safe crossing opportunity.

The bridge is a reinforced concrete shell structure and comprises six blocks connected to each other by construction joints. To avoid affecting the simultaneous motorway expansion, the two halves of the arch are built separately. This requires lifting of the halves, concreting to close the gap and lowering of the structure.
At the end of July, the second to last partial block was concreted. Completion of the bridge is planned for autumn 2025.
