Elbe crossing

First opportunity to cross the Elbe west of Hamburg

5.7
km of tunnel length

This will make it the longest underwater tunnel in Germany.

Important section: Elbe tunnel to relieve congestion on the A7 motorway

As the western continuation of the Lübeck–Szczecin Baltic motorway, the A20 will form an important east–west link in the north and connect the German seaports on the North and Baltic Seas as a hinterland connection.

  • Because there is currently no Elbe crossing west of Hamburg, the new Elbe tunnel will considerably relieve the A7 motorway. The “A20 Elbe crossing” begins on the Lower Saxony side in the area of the future A 20/A 22/A 26 motorway junction or the K28 junction south of Drochtersen and ends on the Schleswig-Holstein side before the A 20/B 431 connection point north of Kollmar
  • The construction section will be a twin-tube shield tunnel with an internal diameter of 12.20 m. With a total length of 6.5 km (including entrance and exit trough areas), the Elbe crossing will be the longest underwater tunnel in Germany
