Funkturm motorway junction

A mammoth task under ongoing traffic: 25 bridges replace 23 existing structures

220
thousand vehicles/day traffic volume

This makes it one of the busiest motorway intersections in Europe.

Comprehensive remodelling with ongoing traffic

The Funkturm motorway junction links the two A115 motorways and the A100 Berlin ring road. It is located in the city centre in the Charlottenburg–Wilmersdorf district and crosses several railway junctions. It is not designed for current traffic volumes, and some of the structures have reached the end of their service life and need to be replaced. Because of the inner-city location, various constraints (monument protection, noise and emission protection) must be taken into account.

Planning period

2018–2024

Service areas

Object planning for civil engineering structures, structural engineering, replacement construction of ring railway bridge, Halenseestraßenbrücke and bridges over the service area, new construction of noise protection walls, various retaining walls, various temporary structures, BIM planning in all work phases, coordination services for railway trades, sequence and traffic routing planning, special services: Manufacturing, demolition, and logistics studies, recalculations

Construction
Construction expected to start in 2026/2027
Project scope
25 bridges, 23 retaining walls, seven noise protection walls, 32 temporary bridges and retaining walls to maintain traffic, lanes per carriageway in each direction on the A100 with ongoing traffic for the entire construction period
“At the time of their construction, it was possible to build structures such as the Funkturm motorway junction in a new, unused location. We now have to carry out the remodelling whilst minimising the impact on traffic because it cannot be shifted to the city road network”.

Ulrich Castrischer, Branch Manager in Berlin

In the course of the necessary replacement construction, the traffic routing will be optimised, connection points will be reorganised, and both traffic safety and noise protection will be improved. The renewals are to be carried out whilst maintaining traffic on all lanes.

The remodelling includes the following measures:
  • Replacement construction of the motorway junction, including all connecting ramps to the subordinate road network
  • Remodelling of the A100 and A115 motorways, partial relocation to a new location
  • New construction of a connection point
  • Demolition of 23 bridge structures, 11 retaining walls, a noise protection wall, a tunnel, 19 traffic sign bridges and a crash barrier as well as 1.9 km of motorway
  • New construction of 31 bridge structures, 24 retaining walls, 10 noise protection walls, and 22 traffic sign bridges as well as 1.9 km of motorway
