Exciting première: first German road bridge built using the VTR construction method

Renovation of a central traffic interchange

As the south-eastern section of the Cologne ring road, the Heumar motorway junction connects the A3, A4, and A59 motorways. In the meantime, it has become outdated, and many of the buildings show deficits. In the course of the renovation and remodelling work, 12 existing buildings will be replaced by 11 new buildings.

First German road bridge built using the VTR construction method

In order to reduce the construction time for the largest bridge in Heumar, a new feature is planned: the first road bridge in Germany to be built modularly and with a high degree of prefabrication using the composite girder grid (Verbundträgerrost; VTR) construction method developed by SSF Ingenieure. The pivotal point of the remodelling is the direct ramp of the motorway intersection: The existing embankment with three smaller bridges is to be replaced by a new, 1.8 km long embankment with a 325 m long bridge as a steel composite construction over the motorway junction. To ensure that traffic on the underpassed carriageways is not impaired, the incremental launching method is to be used. Once the new ramp is finished, the existing structures will be dismantled. This will be followed by the demolition and new construction of the other structures.

“We aim to disrupt traffic as little as possible during the construction period and create a sustainable infrastructure”.
