Rader High Bridge

Germany’s second-largest steel road bridge

1.500
metres of total length

It makes the work on the elevated bridge a major construction site in the truest sense of the word.

Bridge construction without interrupting traffic

The Rader high bridge in Schleswig-Holstein carries the A7 motorway over the Kiel Canal and the “Borgstedter Enge”. it was opened to traffic in 1972 and has played a central role in traffic to and from Denmark and Scandinavia ever since.

  • The existing Rader high bridge must be replaced by a new structure because there is no economical solution for strengthening the structure
  • The remaining useful life of the existing building ends in 2026
  • The main supporting width of the two new superstructures over the Kiel Canal is 224 m
  • The foundations for the bridge piers in the “Borgstedter Enge” must be constructed in the water and have bored piles up to 40 m long

The planning of a semi-integral structure of this size with a main supporting width of 224 m as a composite bridge is unique in Germany.
