Project Completion: Conversion of Augsburg Central Station

Barrier-free railway station opened for operation

To make public transport more efficient and attractive, the city of Augsburg initiated the transport project “mobility hub Augsburg” comprising several coordinated projects. A major part of the project is the conversion of Augsburg central station to a barrier-free and modern transport hub. Rail and access traffic runs coordinated on three levels: on the surface with the railway platforms of Deutsche Bahn, at level -2 in the area of a new tramway station, and, in between, at a distribution level which connects both rail systems by elevators and escalators in a barrier-free manner.

At the end of 2023, the new barrier-free station including the intermediate level and the new pedestrian tunnel were opened. The historic station hall was also opened again after the construction. Now, passengers move easily and barrier-free from the station hall into the intermediate level and from there to the modernised platforms.

We are happy about this important milestone of the large-scale project and excitedly look forward to the last steps: In the course of 2024, the new tramway station underneath the central station will be completed. The new tram tunnel will facilitate easy transit from Deutsche Bahn’s regional and long-distance railway transport to the inner-city public transport system.
